What Should I Invest In for 2012? Part-2

January 24th, 2012 Interviews19 comments

As mentioned in Part-1 of this series, I set out to write a wrap-up of investing strategies for 2012. While I was writing the post, the thought occurred to me why not ask the other well known bloggers and financial writers what they think? I was delighted with the response I received, and it’s now turned into this much larger two-part post. Here is a recap what I sent them, hoping for a small paragraph: “Short of hauling out the crystal ball, because your guess is as good as mine, I also wanted to know what sectors are in your radar, or even what stocks are on your favourite list – if you’re so inclined to share with my readers.” “What do you think is the most important lesson investors need to remember going into 2012? Where do you think the best investment opportunities for investors will be? “ Here is what these financial bloggers and writers think are the best investment strategies and opportunities for 2012 (Part -2): Derek Foster – The Idiot Millionaire ...

Getting Started with DRIPs and SPPs, Part -4

November 21st, 2011 DRIPs3 comments

DRIP (Dividend Reinvestment Plan) and SPP (Share Purchase Plan) plans, are an ideal way for investors to buy shares of their favourite companies, with small amounts of initial capital. DRIPs combined with SPPs are especially powerful as they allow investors to dollar cost average their shares over the long run, avoid ongoing commissions, and to reinvest dividends into partial shares. It’s a win win for investors who have the patience and long term commitment required. As Mark points out in part-1 of the series, “There’s do-it-yourself investing and then there’s really do-it-yourself investing” .If you’re wondering why you should invest with DRIPs and SPPs in the first place, then be sure to read this superb guest post by Hank Coleman, Five Reasons I Love Investing with DRIPs, which inspired this series. Mark at My Own Advisor concludes his stellar series on investing with DRIPs and SPPs, in Getting Started with DRIPs and SPPs, Part-4. A Quick Recap… If you missed this ...

Getting started with DRIPs and SPPs, Part -3

November 18th, 2011 DRIPs17 comments

The following is a guest post from one of my favourite bloggers, Mark at My Own Advisor.  Welcome to Part-3 in a four-part series written by yours truly, Mark at My Own Advisor, on how to get started and then invest in Canadian dividend-paying stocks with DRIPs and SPPs. In Part-1 I answered the question, what is a DRIP and SPP? In Part-2 I then explained how you can I get started with full DRIPs. In this post, Part-3 of Getting started with DRIPs and SPPs on the Dividend Ninja’s fine website, I’m going to continue sharing the process I followed to start DRIPping. This includes buying my first share via my discount brokerage account and ordering that stock in certificated form.  I look forward to sharing these details with you! First, a quick recap… In Part-2, I mentioned that you can get your first stock share from either another investor (option -1) or from a pooled-purchase/group buy (option -2).  In that article, I chose Option 3 – Do-it-yourself via initial stock ...

Getting started with DRIPs and SPPs, Part -2

November 16th, 2011 DRIPs7 comments

In October, Hank Coleman wrote a superb guest post for me on DRIPs (Dividend Reinvestment Plans), in Five Reasons I Love Investing with DRIPs. After this post, I became really intrigued with the process of DRIPs, and the ability to contribute small amounts of capital per month, and reinvest partial dividends. As well, readers were asking questions on the process. I knew my good friend Mark at My Own Advisor, another Canadian investor, had been DRIPping for years. I asked Mark if he wanted to write me a guest post on how to setup a DRIP for Canadians, from start to finish. Two weeks later I received a 3500 word post on exactly that and then some! It seemed a better idea to split this series up into four parts and share with both our readers. After all, I didn’t want to take all the credit for Mark’s work! Question to My Own Advisor: I’ve heard about dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) – what are they? In Part-1, Mark defined what Synthetic DRIPs, Full DRIPs and SPPs are, as ...

Getting started with DRIPs and SPPs, Part -1

November 12th, 2011 DRIPs13 comments

The following is a guest post from one of my favourite bloggers, Mark at My Own Advisor. There’s do-it-yourself investing and then there’s really do-it-yourself investing. I’d definitely put full dividend reinvestment plans (DRIPs) that include share purchase plans (SPPs) in the latter category.  Not that full DRIPs are a difficult animal to understand but it does take some time and some know-how to get going.  Luckily for you, you’ve found this blog today and in the days to come I’ll give you some guidance to starting your DRIPping journey with company transfer agents, and some help for you to get that first stock share. Am I still speaking a foreign language to you?  Don’t worry folks, it will all become clear. Getting started with DRIPs and SPPs is going to be a four-part series, providing you with an overview of full DRIPs with SPPs as they apply to Canadian dividend-paying stocks. You can read parts 1 and 3 here on the Dividend Ninja, and Parts 2 and 4 on my blog at ...
